If we threw every writer out of the canon who wasn’t, at least part of the time, a jerk and an asshole, we might be left with Jane Austen and the Venerable Bede. And I’m not completely sure about Jane.
Bede was actually rather prejudiced against the native Britons. For example, in Chapter XII of Ecclesiastical History of the English People, he calls them “piteous” and their country “wretched”; he goes on to say they are driven by cowardice rather than courage. It’s not Lovecraft’s implication that Africans aren’t proper humans, but still well into jerk territory.
